When used properly, trackbacks and pingbacks are an excellent way to build links and traffic to your blog, as well as building relationships with other bloggers.

What Is Trackback?

In layman�s terms, trackback is a way to notify a website when you publish an entry that references it.

When you send it a trackback, a link with a short excerpt of your entry will appear on the referenced website.

How To Locate The Trackback Link

When you want to trackback, you will need to use a special link provided on the blog you want to reference.

Most trackback links appear just after the blog post content and before the comments.

Sometimes the link will appear as a plain text link:

Other times it will be a hyperlink:

If the trackback URL is hyperlinked, you�ll need to right click on it and select �Copy link location�� (or your browser�s equivalent), otherwise, you can highlight and copy the link.

If you plan to reference more than one blog entry, each trackback URL will need to be copied individually.

(Please note: Not all blogs display their trackback URL in plain view, some blogs even turn off their trackback. When in doubt, contact the blog author.)

Sending A Trackback

Before you publish your blog entry, you�ll need to tell WordPress to send your trackback notices.

Paste the trackback URLs into the box next to �Send Trackbacks To.�

In WordPress 1.5, the box appears in the Advanced section below the post content box. Note: you�ll need to be in Advanced Editing mode to see the Advanced options box.

In WordPress 2.0, it�s just below the Upload box. If the Trackback box itself isn�t revealed, click on the �+� sign.

Once you�ve added all the URLs you want to trackback, the moment you hit the Publish button, the blog(s) will be notified.

WordPress� Built In Ping Feature

WordPress takes trackback to a new level by allowing pingbacks.

Pingbacks allow you to notify a weblog of your entry just by posting its permalink directly in the content of your blog entry. No special trackback link necessary.

To enable pinging URLs in the blog entry, make sure there is a check mark next to �Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)� in the �Options->Discussion� section of the WordPress admin panel.

Checking Whether A Website Supports Pingbacks

You can generally assume that most WordPress blogs will support the pingback feature, however, it can be disabled or moderated based by the blog owner.

If you want to be certain pingbacks are supported, you need only look in the HTML coding for a line similar to:
<link rel=”pingback” href=”…” mce_href=”…” />

If the site has pings enabled, a link with a brief sampling of the text around it will appear on their blog.

Checking If Your Trackback or Pingback Was Successful

Successful trackbacks and pingbacks usually appear within moments of publishing your blog entry, but remember that trackbacks and pingbacks can be moderated or disabled by the blog owners.

You can also verify that the trackback and pingback were sent successfully by clicking on Edit next to the blog entry you published and scrolling down below the Custom Fields. WordPress will display all the URLs that were notified about your blog entry.

Sometimes a blog may be having technical difficulties with the trackback or pingback system. If you believe that is the case, you can politely send the blog owner a message outlining the potential problem, being sure to include all necessary and relevant information for them to troubleshoot.

Using Trackback and Pingback Wisely

When sending a trackback, be mindful of sending a pingback. If the site you�re linking to has pingbacks enabled, be sure not to trackback. You may end up inadvertently posting two links to their site and this may annoy some webmasters, or may even be construed as attempted spamming.

Avoid sending a trackback unless you actually reference or link to the site you�re sending the trackback to, otherwise, it can be considered spam.

If your trackback or pingback doesn�t show up on the website, don�t try to force it by continually using trackback or pingback. Instead, head over to the actual blog entry and leave a note with a link to your blog entry manually. If the blog owner thinks it�s relevant enough, he will approve it.

Allowing Trackbacks/Pingbacks on Your Blog

WordPress allows you to set your default ping status in the Options menu. If you know that the majority of your posts will have trackback/pingback enabled, setting it to accept them could make your blogging life a little easier.

From your admin panel, click on Options->Discussion and place a check mark next to �Allow link notifications from other Weblogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)� and remember to click on Update Options when you�re finished.

Post by Post basis

You can also handle your trackbacks/pingbacks on a per post basis � this will also override the setting in your options panel. From the Write->Post screen, make sure there is a check next to �Allow Pings� in the Discussion box.

If there is no check mark in that box, then the post will not accept trackbacks or pingbacks.

We’ve tested a number of AdSense products, and will be reviewing them in the course of our blogging. One of the first products we examine will be a series of videos by UK AdSense expert Michael Cheney. For the moment, here’s an interview with Michael in which he discusses his experience with AdSense.

Q. So what made you get started with AdSense?

A. I was looking for a way to monetize some of my websites. AdSense is such an easy thing to get started with the eye for it would be a great way to start earning more money without actually putting into much more effort. I think as soon as you see the first earnings coming into your account you get addicted to AdSense. I know it’s what happened to me, and since then I’ve just spent time working out how to earn more and more each day.

Q. How much do you make with AdSense?

A. Some days I can earn close to $1,000 and others it’s less than that. But it all comes down to how much time and effort you devote to creating a quality site that people like visiting. AdSense is not what my business is based on by any means - but it is a great way to earn revenue almost on autopilot.

Q. What is the biggest mistake people making with AdSense?

A. Probably the biggest mistake people make is thinking the AdSense earnings are easy to achieve. It is very easy to get started but as I learned it takes a lot of effort to increase your earnings. I got really downhearted whenever I would log in to my account to see that I had only made a few dollars. And that’s when I decided to spend months and months of my time learning everything I could about AdSense.

I basically buried myself away and devoured every single piece of AdSense information I could find. I ran thousands of AdSense tests and started to see a dramatic effect on my click through ratio and therefore on my earnings.

This is why I’d decided to record the videos - because I knew that it would help people who were in my position to also increase their earnings. I’ve read an absolute ton of AdSense e-book’s but they take so long to go through and always seem to keep information back.

With AdSense Videos I knew that I had to tell the story exactly as it is and actually show people and lead them by the hand through the exact techniques that I use to generate large earnings from AdSense.

Q. In your videos you show people how to increase their AdSense earnings - can you give us a taster of this advice?

A. I don’t want to give away my biggest secrets as you can understand! But some of the more basic things that you can do to increase your revenues include using ads that blend in rather than stand out from your content. Flat out the worst thing you can do with an AdSense ad is make it look like the standard Google ad. What you need to realise is that you will get more clicks if your ad actually appears part of your site rather than something that’s just been dropped into the page.

Q. What would you recommend that someone do right now to increase their AdSense earnings?

You probably would have searched a list of high paying keywords and used them on your site to achieve maximum relevant ads displayed so that you get maximum payout rate. What may seem to be the highest paid keyword is not really the deal.

The fact that many people are having the wrong idea of placing high paid keywords into their blog which don’t seem relevant at all. If you blog about Pets and if you suddenly talk about Personal injuries because they pay you a higher keyword rate then, you might have lost enough traffic and click as the days go by.

I was very curious about these highest paid keywords, and i personally had fell into this trap, in 2005 before i started to blog on making money online, i started a blog named ‘EngineBlock.blogspot.com’ and i used the highest paying keywords i can find to fit on both my meta keywords and also my contents such as online car insurances,car accident attorney,free online auto insurance quote,free car insurance quotes, loans and etc.

All these keywords are more than $30 per click but my blog lasted for 4 months before everything ended, why is that so,I will tell you why it’s not going to work out for you even if i give you tons of great paid keywords.

Mesothelioma ranks number one as the most expensive keyword for the past few years and it always hits the top 10 list twice with “mesothelioma” as a keyword, so why are they priced with such a heavy tag. “Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos.”
This can means a law suit case which eventually involve tens of thousands so people are willing to advertise at a high price. It could be another reason but no one seems to have got the correct answer to why they are the most expensive keyword.

Why placing high paid keywords will not work for an average joe
If you want to make this high paid keyword work on your blog, then make sure you have a vast knowledge on what you are writing and make sure you offer professional consulting help online. Don’t make a fool of yourself and start blogging what mesothelioma is all about by copying articles from other sites who are actual professionals offering help to the needy people and not know what it actually means.

Why people who blog about mesothelioma will not put ads
Come on these guys are professional lawyer who make millions a year, would a lawyer want such revenues or would they want to attract more customers so that they can charge on consultation fees, which is more relevant and if you search on “mesothelioma blog” on google, you will notice that most of the links don’t show ads on their site.

Pursuing your passion rather than trying your luck
Be who you are and live your passion to write on things you are good at. Trust me eventually what you love to write on with continue and it by the time you track back when you started blogging, you will be amazed you have done it for 5 years already! Never start a blog without knowing what you are writing about, because it will end there like how i closed “Engineblock.blogspot.com” in 4 months time because i don’t have anymore topics to write on, slowly the traffic will decline and automatically your blog is pronounced dead!

Leverage your adsense placement for higher revenue
There are tons of ways to leverage Adsense and also every new users would want to know where they can optimize the best placement for their ads. There is no right on wrong, but placing ads within the contents seems to be the most efficient so you may want to try having them on your contents and after a month notice the difference and try other ads size if you wish to and experiment.
